The President

Nation-building

Education is the passion of Tan Sri Lim’s life, but it is not the only area that he has devoted his considerable talents in the service of his country. He has conceived and implemented a multitude of national issues and nation-building campaigns for the Malaysian Government that served to promote unity, change mindset and increase awareness.

He launched a campaign to get Malaysians and private companies involved in the 16th Commonwealth Games hosted by Kuala Lumpur in 1998. His company designed the Games’ mascot and logo and composed promotional songs. He advised the Vietnamese Government in the conduct of the 22nd Southeast Asian Games in December 2003, a role which expanded to include charting strategies to promote Vietnam to the world to boost its tourism.

He organised the first Kuala Lumpur World Peace Conference in 2003 at which former French President Jacques Chirac received the inaugural Kuala Lumpur World Peace Award.

The most memorable campaigns include the Global Humanitarian Appeal for Bosnia-Herzegovina and the Voter Education Exercise for South Africa’s first democratic elections won by Nelson Mandela.

He was there to drive information campaigns, such as the One Heart One Nation campaign, to rally public support and calm fears during Malaysia’s political and financial crises in 1997-98.

He guided his students and faculty in carrying out a HIV/AIDS awareness campaign in collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme. He inspired his students in designing the uniforms for trainees of the National Service Programme introduced for school-leavers.

The Limkokwing group produced audio-visual materials and creative content for the World Halal Forum 2006 to highlight Malaysia as a major halal food hub. Halal is an Islamic set of standards for quality preparation of food and other items.

The group also developed script, video, music and creative work for presentation at the World Congress on Information Technology, Texas, in 2006 to prepare for the next WCIT that will be hosted by Malaysia in 2008.

Other successful campaigns include:

  • Vision 2020, the blueprint for Malaysia to attain developed nation status
  • Malaysia Incorporated, a philosophy on positive and productive partnership between Government and the private sector in business, trade and industry
  • Made in Malaysia For The World, promoting Malaysia’s international trade and industry
  • Tak Nak, an anti-smoking campaign with the simple message in Malay that means “Say No”
  • Malaysia Boleh (Malaysia Can), a catchphrase turned into a song to inspire Malaysians to compete and excel
  • Malaysia Segar – Vision for a Clean and Green Nation, a drive to introduce thermal treatment for waste disposal
  • Reach Out, working towards a generous and charitable society
  • Proud To be Malaysian, enhancing national unity among Malaysians
  • Be Good To Your Neighbours, fostering neighbourliness and racial harmony
  • Unity 2001, promoting patriotism and gratitude for the good things in life to foster peace and contentment
  • Perdana Global Peace Forum in 2005, by recreating a War Zone Experience using horrifying images of children and civilians who fell victim to bombs and other attacks, he wanted people to understand that war was an ugly experience and that peace by diplomacy and negotiation provided the only solution.
